New Factsheet: AI in Local Government

Digital transformation at the local level is a key factor for fostering economic growth and advancing the European Union integration of countries in the Western Balkans and Moldova. Building on the study Empowering Progress with Digital Transition in Western Balkan and Moldova Local Governments (2023), the new factsheet Artificial Intelligence in Local Government: Driving Innovation, Bridging Gaps, and Shaping the Digital Transition in the Western Balkans and Moldova highlights the crucial role of AI in local government. The factsheet is a product of the BACID project with funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation.




New Podcast Episode: What Austria Can Learn From the Reform of Municipal Structures in Estonia

In the latest episode of the KDZ podcast, Siegfried Fritz talks to Karin Närep about the background, successes and takeaways of the municipal reform in Estonia. Karin Närep worked at the Ministry of Finance at the time of the municipal reform and can report directly on the effects on cities and municipalities, as she actually works in a municipality that was created from 11 former municipalities. Find out how Estonia reduced the number of municipalities from 213 to 79 between 2016 and 2017, why the number of inhabitants was an important basis for Estonian municipalities and how social guarantees for top municipal staff influenced the reform.

It is funded by the European Union via the Technical Support Instrument, and implemented by Expertise France, KDZ and I4CE - Institute for Climate Economics in cooperation with the European Commission. Planning for the cost of climate action: a practical guide for local governments

Local authorities are crucial actors in driving climate action due to their significant public investment responsibilities, such as expanding public transport and retrofitting public buildings. In France, for example, local governments must double their decarbonization investments by 2030. Marion Fetet, Research Fellow at I4CE, introduces a practical guide for local governments to develop a method for creating a climate-aligned financing plan on KDZ blog.
